It's always exciting news when you find out your close friend is getting married, but have you ever stopped to consider how much the wedding is going to cost you?

Life insurance broker, Reassured polled 1,500 people to reveal the costs of attending a hen party. To be exact, you'll be out of pocket by nearly £979 for attending the hen party!

From a boozy weekend staycation in a local city or jetting off to somewhere sunnier, it clearly builds up than you may have first imagined. It now may not surprise you to hear that nearly half (43%) of hen party-goers believe they are an unnecessary expense. Nonetheless, 42% still felt pressured into attending such an event. However, Brides seem to have no regrets with over two thirds (68%) being glad to have had a hen party, with 65% having high expectations and expecting their bridesmaid to organise the party for them as a surprise!

Reassured also spoke to Charlie, from Leeds who attended her sister's hen do, a ski trip to Val d'Isere, which cost her £2,200! Charlie, from Leeds said: "With it being a seven-day trip it was an extremely extravagant hen do. Altogether nine guests attended, but some only stayed for three days due to the cost being that high. It really was the cost involved to get there that tipped it over and made it so expensive! The bride had really high expectations, so the costs simply spiralled."

How to throw a hen party on a budget
To help with the soaring costs of hen parties, Reassured is here to help with some simple tips and tricks on how to throw a hen party on a budget:

1. Set a budget and stick to it
Determine how much you and all the bridal party can afford to spend on the hen party and stick to it. This will help you make informed decisions and priortise where to allocate your funds so that no one is out of pocket.

2. Plan low-cost activities
There are plenty of hen and affordable activities that you can do at a hen party that don't cost the earth, from having a garden party at home, to making your own cocktails from recipe cards online that don't need a cocktail master to do the work for you.

3. Bring your own drinks
To save on alcohol costs, consider having a BYOB party or paying for alcohol in bulk from a wholesaler or supermarket, this can half the bill of booze.

4. DIY decorations
Why not gather the bridal party together and create your own decorations using craft suppliers and materials, You can make banners, garlands, and centrepieces that match the brides's theme or colour scheme.

5. Plan in advance
Start planning early to take advantage of early bird offers and giving you more time to shop around the best deals across venues, activities and decorations.

6. Keep the guest list small
Limit the number of guests to keep costs down. A smaller group allows you to focus on creating a more intimate and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

A spokesman from Reassured comments on the study: "It is interesting to see people's general perception of hen dos and how much some people are willing to spend. When getting married it is always wise to plan ahead. Putting life insurance into place is a cost-effective way of ensuring the financial future of loved ones and as the UK's largest broker, we are on hand to help make sure you get the protection you need quickly and efficiently."

Married to your surname? 26% of women are planning on keeping theirs

Lots of people are ditching traditions when it comes to modern weddings and marriage - one of which quickly losing favour is the tradition of taking your partner's surname. In a recent survey carried out by Pandora UK, almost nine in ten (88%) women said they think that attitudes to married names are changing in 2026 ¹. When asked, over a quarter (26%) of unmarried women said they'd keep their last name if they got married, whilst less than half (45%) said they'd take their partner's name. This is indicative of the shift in opinion in recent years, as when married women were asked, only a sixth (17%) of women said they kept their maiden names when they got married, whilst the majority (78%) took their partner's surname, with just 4% choosing to double-barrel their last name with their significant other.
