Five minutes with Nicholas Wylde, Wylde Jewellers

Please tell us a bit about yourself

I opened my first Wylde Jewellers store 36 years ago with just 12 rings in the window. I’m still as passionate now as I was back then about being one of the leading jewellers in the UK – being at the forefront of the industry, offering unique jewellery and high quality service, in a relaxed, friendly way. We carry one of the largest selections of wedding rings in the South West, offering all of the popular metals like gold, platinum, palladium, titanium, and incorporating other materials including graphite, carbon, wood and glass – as well as precious stones, of course! We always aim to be competitive, as we know how expensive a wedding day can be! It's important to us that our clients become clients for life, and we're proud to be the jewellers of choice for many families where three generations have married with Wylde wedding rings!

The modern wedding is all about creating a day that's as personal as possible. How can this idea be extended to wedding jewellery?

This is truly where we come into our element! Our designers will listen to the details of the wedding day you're organising and will work with you to design rings that'll reflect not only that day but your journey together so far and your future. We can design rings to tell your story, take a design from the wedding dress or the invitations, look at the colour theme, or cleverly hide some bespoke personalisation in the design. We can also create other bespoke jewellery for your big day, such as a necklace that'll perfectly match the details of the bride’s dress or cufflinks that incorporate your colour palette. We can also design items to gift to bridesmaids and groomsmen, for anybody in the wedding partyin fact! Being part of such an intimate and personal journey is so important to us, and we love knowing that our jewellery plays such an important part in creating lifelong memories of your special day.

A common concern is finding a wedding ring to suit a bride's engagement ring. Do you have any advice?

Unfortunately, many jewellers will sell an engagement ring without offering any advice about choosing a future wedding ring, so we do frequently assist clients in understanding the choices they may have and what style will best complement their existing jewellery. Sometimes, we do need to slightly alter the engagement ring to accommodate the style of wedding ring that's been chosen but we do this sympathetically to the original design, ensuring the structure of the engagement ring is secure. With an almost infinite range of designs and options, Wylde’s is here with our 36 years of experience to guide you.

How can a couple bring elements of commonality into their rings if they don't want them to match exactly

It's often the case that engaged couples will want to choose wedding rings that differ in style from each other but there are still many ways that we can unify them. For example, one partner might have chosen a fancy diamond-set wedding ring, or a ring with specific design details, or even with multicolour metals or gemstones. In these cases, we can take an element of this ring and incorporate it into their partner’s ring, perhaps with a subtle interpretation of the design or a single matching stone either on the outside or hidden on the inside of the band. We're full of ideas as extravagant or as understated as you wish! We can offer personal hand-engraving of everything from names and dates, to very personal choices like our previous commissions of frogs or the Eiffel Tower. I’ve even made a pair of rings that incorporated the decorative details of New York’s Grand Central Station.

What's important to bear in mind when it comes to caring for a wedding ring and ensuring its longevity?

We're here to look after them for you. Some clients prefer to never remove their wedding ring so we do provide a cloth that can be used to buff the ring on their hand, but we also always offer a complimentary clean and polish service to all rings (and other jewellery) bought from us. We recommend that you do this at least every three years, so that we can check the rings for any wear and tear. It's always recommended that the same metal is chosen for a wedding ring that will be worn next to an engagement ring, as the differing hardness of metals can mean that one may cause damage to the other, but all precious metals are soft and the style of living in the 21st century means that rings tend to be knocked around, and so it's always prudent to check them from time to time.

Expert says prenups aren't just for the rich and famous

Legal experts at Richard Nelson LLP are urging Brits to rethink who prenups are really for. While often seen as something reserved for high-profile couples, data suggests they remain largely overlooked in everyday relationships. Just 7 percent of divorced Brits had a prenuptial agreement in place before separating, highlighting a significant gap between perception and reality. Regionally, attitudes vary. Manchester has emerged as the UK's 'prenup capital', with 13 percent of divorced couples having one in place, compared to 8 percent in London and 11 percent in Birmingham. Meanwhile, cities including Liverpool and Southampton reported no uptake among those surveyed.
