If you're feeling cautious about your bridal boutique appointment, that's quite understandable. With such a world of choice when it comes to picking a wedding dress it can indeed feel overwhelming, particularly if you're not used to seeing yourself in something so grand – let's face it, who is? For such an important decision it's natural that you'll want to be comfortable and able to feel as much yourself in your environment as possible. While it might be tempting to pop into one shop that you pass every day or that seems cheap, it might not be the right place for you. So, we'd advise a little pre-shopping online first. Which, boutiques stock your preferred designers? Do they offer one-to-one appointments where you'll have their undivided attention? And check out their reviews. If they're packed with brides saying how much they loved their experience, it looks like you'll be in safe hands!
Next, what to prepare. While it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with silhouettes and have an idea of what might suit you going in, you may well find yourself surprised when you fall in love with something completely out of your comfort zone. Your consultant will have a trained eye and will be able to instinctively know what will suit you, so do trust them and give their suggestions a shot. We can't tell you how often we've heard that the wild card turned out to be the one.
In terms of what to take with you, you might consider a strapless bra, which will help you to visualise the final look more effectively. Avoid black underwear, white or neutral is best. If you've got a Pinterest board on the go, show it to your consultant to get them started. Don't worry too much about shoes at this stage, as they'll come into play more so during the alterations process – sample gowns will rarely be the right length anyway.
Finally, your entourage. Choose carefully, as too many opinions can lead to confusion and overwhelm. Just take your nearest and dearest whose thoughts you'll value above any others; those you can't imagine making the decision without. Don't be bullied into taking anyone else, particularly if you know you won't feel comfortable around them. Now you're ready to be welcomed, pampered and made to feel like a million dollars during this incredibly exciting experience!
