Chedworth Roman Villa in the Cotswolds is set to transport visitors back in time with its upcoming Roman Crafts Weekend. This event offers a glimpse into the intricate world of Roman craftsmanship, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the techniques that shaped the luxurious lifestyle of the elite families of Roman Britain.

The weekend will showcase the sophistication of Roman villa decoration, from the intricate patterns of floor mosaics to the elegant frescoes that adorned the walls. Visitors will also be able to witness demonstrations of bone jewellery making, hear about the skill needed to create Roman medical instruments, and inspect the artistry on rare coins from across the Roman empire.

Mike Bryan, who plays Appian, Chedworth's Master Mosaicist, says: "Visitors love watching how ancient mosaics are made. My character explains how stone and other materials are sourced, cut into tiny mosaic pieces called tesserae and then placed to create impressive designs."

This family-friendly event caters to history enthusiasts, craft lovers, and curious minds of all ages. Roman Crafts Weekend offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and technology that underpinned Roman society.

Aimee Williams, Visitor Experience Officer at Chedworth says: "This is one of the highlights of the events calendar. People come from all over the country to find out more about the artisans who designed, built and decorated one of the grandest Villas in Roman Britain."

The event runs from 11am-4pm each day, with villa entry available from 10am-4:30pm. Normal admission charges apply, with free entry for National Trust members. No booking required.

Visitors can enhance their day by browsing the villa shop for Roman-inspired gifts, enjoying refreshments at the cafe, or bringing along a picnic to enjoy in the historical surrounding.
