Dunster Castle and Watermill, Somerset, invites visitors to experience the magic of a country Christmas, inspired by the traditions of the Luttrell family, on selected days from Saturday 29 November to Sunday 4 January.
This festive season, the National Trust’s Dunster Castle will be transformed with towering Christmas trees, natural garlands, and seasonal decorations throughout the historic rooms. On weekends leading up to Christmas, visitors can enjoy live music performances, and from 13 to 21 December, the castle will open after dark for a special illuminated experience.
Follow the twinkling path to the castle, which will be beautifully lit against the night sky. Last entry is at 7:15pm, with the grounds closing at 8pm. The Tenants’ Hall will be open for warming drinks and festive treats.
Inside the castle, families can explore decorated rooms and enjoy toys and games in the Morning Room. Younger visitors can settle in for festive storytelling or hunt for knitted robins hidden around the castle. For a glimpse of Christmas below stairs, the Servants’ Hall - rarely open to the public - will be dressed for a more humble, but equally charming, festive scene.
Paul Fry, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager, said: ‘Christmas at Dunster Castle is a truly special time. We’re excited to extend our opening hours and offer even more opportunities for visitors to enjoy the magic of the season. Whether you’re coming for the lights, the music, or simply to soak up the atmosphere, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.’
During the day, the stables will be dressed to welcome Father Christmas and his reindeer for their Christmas Eve pit stop. On 6 and 7 December, visitors can meet real reindeer on Green Court as they prepare for their journey around the world. Father Christmas will also be making appearances on selected dates between 13 and 21 December to share Christmas wishes and hand out gifts to children (booking essential).
The Watermill Tearoom will be serving classic festive treats, including mince pies, gingerbread biscuits, orange, almond and cranberry cake, and mulled wine. Dunster flour and seasonal muesli will be available to purchase for those wanting to bake at home. The Stables Shop is the perfect place to find unique gifts and finishing touches for your Christmas celebrations.
After Christmas, the festive fun continues with a Nutcracker trail around the house from Boxing Day until 4 January. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views from the subtropical South Terrace, explore the natural play area in the River Garden, or set out on self-guided winter walks - routes are available on the Dunster Castle website.
